Happy Juneteenth!
On June 19, 1865 slaves in located in Texas, specifically Galveston learned of their status as free citizens when the union army arrived to deliver the news. For the first time these people were able to taste freedom despite the Emancipation Proclamation legally ending slavery nearly 2 years earlier, in January of 1863. Prior to this day, an estimated 250,000 slaves were not able to enjoy their newly acquired freedom thus marking Juneteenth as our official date of freedom in its entirety.
